As an artist you might fit into one or more of these categories: self-taught, certified, cubist, impressionist, surrealist, hobbyist, professional to name a few. Irrespective of this you might have dreamt, at least once, of becoming an art entrepreneur or artpreneur. Our in-house artist Anuradha Sachidev shares all the important aspects that you need to consider as you begin to think of yourself as an artpreneur.
How many miles to becoming an artpreneur?
Give yourself a deadline, recognise your method of practice, draw up a vision and define your mission. Objectively measure parameters needed to build this vision and to bridge the gap from now to your goal.
Who is your target segment?
Remember, for every product there is a customer and for every customer there is a product. There are no good or bad products. Some are for you while some are not. So for whom are your products for? This can be learnt only once you put yourself out there and with time. Be patient and slowly let your target demographic reveal itself.
How do you go about finances?
Goes without saying you’ll need seed money and more along the way as your business grows. Plan for every incurable cost and watch out for those hidden expenses. A good way to start is to list your needs and wants (luxuries) and set a budget for each item.
Manpower & resources: how and where can you find help?
Initially it’s going to be just you and some software. Eventually you’ll need more people and realise that nothing can replace human input and creativity. Find volunteers and free online resources and work your way up to hiring smart people and buying customised solutions. To paraphrase Steve Jobs, you don’t hire smart people so you can tell them what to do you hire them so they can tell you what and how to do better.
How do you make your presence felt?
Online of course! Reach a bigger crowd and show your presence through social media or a website. Build a character through your curated content and find a unique element that’ll make you recognisable and stand out in a crowd. Give the world a solid reason to want to be associated with you or your brand. If down the lane there is scope for physical presence, go for it!
